Asmaa is a refugee from Syria where she was studying political science. She came to Denmark in 2014 with her two brothers after fleeing to Egypt with her parents and siblings one year before.
She and her brothers could not see a future in Egypt because they were not able to undertake further education. Therefore the family made a decision to leave Egypt through whatever means possible.
Her passage to Denmark was organised through a people smuggler and was expensive and traumatic and took almost three weeks. She went on a crowded boat where she had an accident which rendered her unconscious and to now causes ongoing dizziness and headaches. The boat landed on the Italian coast after 11 days and from there she continued in a car to Denmark.
Asmaa and her brothers spent some time in three different asylum centres and were granted asylum after a short processing period.
She is learning Danish so she can work and undertake further education. In particular she would like to work with Red Cross to both give something back to Denmark and help other people.
